Supplemental directions  for 7 million AU solid SCANMASK  to eliminate imported fire ant colonies – treats 7 colonies

1.  Moisten contents of SCANMASK pint with 1 c. cold water.

 2.  Add to about 1-5 gal. cold water in watering can with rosette removed.  Rinse pint container with cold water. Mix.

                         3.  Pre water colony to be treated by pouring about one gallon cold water down the cone of the colony.

  4.  While swirling watering can, pour about 1/7th of the SCANMASK/ water suspension into middle of the cone.

  5.  Caution:   steps 3 and 4 should be completed quickly, then immediately leave area.  The ants will usually begin to swarm out and can sting!

 6.  The SCANMASK will either penetrate and kill fire ant queens or kill so many workers that the colony starves.

7.      Note:  Adding 2 tablespoons peanut butter to the water in #1 before application can increase effectiveness of treatment.

I, II- Solid  SOLID MIXTURE – Prepare before (I) Topdressing Application or (II) Transplants and Seeding Application: best methods when applying to lawns and gardens.

A.  FIRST - Prepare SCANMASK mixture.

1.  Add one 1 cup1-cup cold water to plastic SCANMASK container. Allow to sit for 30 minutes at approximately 68º F.

      2.   Moisten 5 quarts peat moss, vermiculite, or sandy humus with 2 quarts water.

      3.   Add contents of SCANMASK container (A.1) to (A.2) and rinse container with about ½ cup water.

      4.   Gently mix until SCANMASK is evenly distributed.

B. NEXT – Apply mixture, (A.4).

(I) Topdressing Application – After preparation above

1.    Water the treatment area before application.  Treat at dusk if possible.

2.    Distribute mixture (A.4) by hand.  Concentrate on infested areas and around base of plants.

Treat up to 200 sq. ft. with mixture (370 sq. ft. for white grubs).

3.        After application, water again.  Mixture should be washed from all leaf surfaces.

(II) Transplants and Seeding Application - After preparation above

      1.    Water the treatment area before application, if not moist.

      2.    Apply soil media above and below seeds or transplants roots.

             a. SEEDS: treats 800 ft. of 3-inch furrows

             b. TRANSPLANTS: treats 200 plants spaced 4 inches apart.

3.  Water after application.

III, IV - SUSPENSION - Prepare before (III) Spray Application or (IV) Injection Application.  Spray only if insect requires it.  Spraying lawns and gardens gives much poorer results than methods I &II!

 A.     First, prepare Suspension.

1.   Add  contents of container of SCANMASK, above to 2 gallons cold water. Mix.

2.   After mixing allow coarse carrier to float to the surface for 30 minutes.

3.   Skim carrier from  the surface with strainer.  What remains is a suspension of nematodes.

3.       Carrier can be used like mixture (A.4).  It still contains many nematodes, AU.

a.    Treat up to 60 sq. ft. (111 sq. ft. for white grubs)

4.       Suspension can be kept in a refrigerator for 1 month, if shaken daily.

B. (III) Spray Application – Always sieve suspension to avoid clogging.

           Adding Suspension to Sprayer

1.       Pressure sprayer or hand pump aerosol sprayer

a.   Adjust sprayer to give a course spray with clean water.

b.   Add the 2 gal of above suspension (A.3) through a sieve.

c.   Remove all screens and spray with agitation.

2.       Hose sprayer.

a.   After being allowed to sit undisturbed 30 min., gently pour away top water of suspension (A.3) leaving 1-2 pints of bottom sediment with nematodes.

b.   Add pint of sediment, rinse out suspension container into sprayer with a small amount of water.

      General spraying directions:

1.       Premoisten surface.

2.       Agitate or shake gently during application.

3.       Apply directly on burrow entrances, corn silks, and flower buds.

4.       Treat up to 140 sq. ft.

C.  (IV) Injection Application:  for individual insect burrows – , very effective!

       1.   Take 1-pint of the bottom sediment,  (B.2.a.).

2.       Inject about 1 tablespoon of sediment per burrow with an eyedropper, squeeze bottle, or oilcan.

3.       Plug burrows with putty, if possible, and agitate suspension between injections.  Treats up to 90 burrows.
