Brief History of BioLogic

BioLogic was founded in April 1985 by Albert Pye, and incorporated in 1988. It is a biotechnology company that develops and manufactures products for the biological control of pests using their natural enemies. Specifically, the company currently produces beneficial nematodes, microscopic worms, to kill soil and cryptic pests: grubs, borers, etc. BioLogic produces for lawn and garden customers and for commercial horticulture. In addition to culturing nematodes, BioLogic specially formulates and packages them for sales through distributors. The company also provides technical service for end users.

Pye has studied biological control since 1966 and published 19 technical articles on related subjects. From 1974 until 1985 Pye worked at the University of Umeå, Sweden. His work with beneficial nematodes started there in 1976. He discovered several previously unknown aspects of their physiology.

From 1985-1989 BioLogic operated from the basement and garage of a Chambersburg, PA, residence. In 1989 the company moved to its present 8,000 sq. ft. facility in Willow Hill, PA, 1 mile from I76. The company has approximately 100 acres available for experiments in field and woodland plots.

Sales in 1985 were very small, but have grown exponentially since then. A large part of recent sales has been exports as well as sales throughout the US. Most of the company's growth has been financed through sales income. Currently, family members own 100% of BioLogic's stock, but ownership may be spread to other key employees.

The long-term goal of BioLogic is to sell safe biological control agents to control every pest for which it is technically and economically feasible. Presently, the company is marketing six products. Several new ones are also being developed or researched.
